Our Trip to Middle Caicos for the National Trust Poster Competition
By Mr. Chung
The time leading up to our scheduled day looked quite uncertain at first due to the heavy rains we experienced the day before. We were quite happy on the day to see the beautiful, fair sky and lovely sunshine.
Our group met up at the Heaving Rock Harbour at 8:30 am and departed Providenciales at 9:00 am via boat. We sailed with children from four other schools in Provo.
When we arrived in beautiful North Caicos, we boarded a big, yellow school bus. It took us across the causeway to Middle Caicos. There, we visited the conference centre were all our posters were displayed. The exhibits were beautifully laid out for our viewing pleasure. Having satisfied our curiosities and settled in, the days main procession formally commenced with a welcome from a member of the National Trust. Certificates were handed out to all participants followed by a brief presentation by Mrs. Saunders on ‘The Importance of Migratory Birds’.
Our big moment came when two of our students’ posters were first selected to an honorary group of top six entrees. Our own, Oliver French, Grade 5, and Hailie Chung, Grade 4, were amongst the six selectees. Even though, Shandia Gardiner, Grade 5, was not selected, we were very proud of the representation she gave us. She was quite happy and excited for her fellow school mates.
Soon after, the final announcement awarded:
Oliver French honorary placement and Hailie Chung 1st placement in the competition.
Their posters will be published in National Trust annual calendar, on NT website and in their student booklet publications.
Well done to all students, especially those from the International School of the Turks and Caicos Islands. Special thanks to Mrs French and Mrs Gardiner; parents who came along with us to give their much appreciated support.
Leaving the conference centre, we went bird watching. We were fortunate to capture in our sights, in close proximity, a pink flamingo. We also saw a huge flock in the distance. On our way to the docks the rain suddenly came. The timing could not have been better. I would say it was a great way to end it all after walking in the heat. The temperature was cooler then.
Having been out for a couple of hours, one begins to miss Providenciales. The boat ride to take us over became a treat to look forward to. We were happy to disembark once again in Providenciales.
Goodbye neighbouring islands, stay majestic and tranquil. We are sure to visit you again.
