To culminate our second term unit on Turks & Caicos Islands Grade 1 went on a magnificent field trip to Little Water Cay also known as Iguana Island.
We were very fascinated to learn about these reptiles and see them in their natural habitat.
The main are the Turks and Caicos Rock Iguanas (Cyclura carinata), which are basically big lizards. They're everywhere on the island due to extensive conservation efforts. Little Water Cay has two sets of loop boardwalks installed, one on the north side and one on the south side of the island.
Unfortunately, these animals are classified as endangered. These lizards used to live on all the islands in the Turks and Caicos, but the introduction by humans of cats and dogs quickly led to their rapid decline and extinction on the other islands.
We could hardly believe that approximately 5000 iguanas call this quiet island home.
We also enjoyed a tour of Half Moon Bay where we had a wonderful picnic lunch and played on the beach and rock pools. We discovered a pond that was filled with upside down jelly fish that we could only observe from a distance.
This was a truly magnificent day and we thought it couldn’t get any better until we saw Jojo and another dolphin which everyone tried to figure out how this dolphin was related to Jojo.
What a truly amazing way to learn about our naturally beautiful country!
