The way Literacy is taught in grade Grade 1 is through a concept called 'The Power of Reading'. The power of reading is not a program, it is a way in which to deliver and teach literacy. Grade 1 begins each new term with a new book to focus on. Last term's book focus was "Bob, Man on the Moon". Initial lessons are open for children to explore just the front cover.
Such questions asked are; By looking at the front cover what do you think this book is about? and, what do you think may happen in this story?
The children then write their views. The whole book is often not read until about lesson 3/4 which by then the children are often immersed and keen to find out the ending. As the lessons progress it leads to children writing in role, creating characters, sequencing and recounting the story, writing new parts and acting out each scene. By the end of each term, children can often recite each scene of the book and have a great understanding of every page.
