We are Living History at the International School
The International School of the Turks and Caicos Islands created a 'Living History' workshop in order to educate and celebrate our islands as part of Education Week TCI. The children were immersed in learning! See All of our Education Week TCI Activities. The Hon. Akierra Missick, who is also Minister for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture, visited the 'Living History' workshop and enthusiastically participated in the many educational activities.
David Bowen presents
Cultural Minister David Bowen gave an enthralling presentation on the importance of the culture and heritage of the Turks and Caicos Islands, stories about language and introduced the types of musical instruments.
Living History for Education Week TCI Centres
The cultural and heritage workshops were divided into four main learning centres. The children rotated around different areas of the school to further explore the salt industry, pirates in the TCI, Native Indians and TCI Culture.
Pirates!
The 'Pirates', 'Arawak’s Camping Ground', 'Maskanoo Costumes & Music' and 'Salt Heritage' centres enabled the children to make maskanoo costumes, create shell tools, sift salt, mural painting and planting, etc.
As part of their topic work all the Grades have been studying the Turks & Caicos Islands in depth, enjoying field trips and also have an Arawak camp and a pirate ship in the school grounds.

Katie Hinks, Principal, invited other primary schools to participate in the cultural activities.
"The children had a wonderful time and really had fun learning in a practical and hands on way during our Living History for Education Week TCI. Visitors were able to join in and work alongside the children. Community outreach is important for us all."
Our school has around 20 different nationalities represented within their staff and student body. Katie Hinks continues,
"We really are an international family. This makes an incredibly rich environment for children’s learning to take place. We always try to embrace the island we live on through our studies, which allows us to truly respect difference and celebrate diversity."
