During circle time the children sit together with the teacher and parent/carer and talk, sing and do simple movements such as clapping and finger play. The central idea in Circle Time is that the children are all together as a group and enjoying an activity together.
The opportunities for play in circle time are endless and so too is the opportunity for children to learn and grow. How to behave appropriately in a group is a learned skill, which prepares young children for more formal education, for other group activities.
What is your favourite song?
Young children and babies absorb life through all their senses and hearing fun sounds, rhythms and songs is a very important part of the learning process. In our group we sing many simple songs that we all grew up with and also songs that teach more meanings like 'quiet and loud', 'open and shut' and 'peekaboo'.
We are always amazed how the quickly the children learn these songs, plus they love the rhythm, clapping, actions and bouncing that go with these melodies too. We had lots of smiles today!
Do you know the actions?
Circle time is perfect for the under threes. Children of this age spend most of their waking hours involved in individual exploratory play, but they have a social impulse too and enjoy gathered times on the floor with their friends and parents. The happy songs and close interaction with the parent really makes for a special moment. It is also useful to calm them down after a busy play in the outdoor area!
Finger games and poems
We have tried to evolve circle games involving the whole body, like ‘I’m a little teapot short and stout’. Singing and chanting songs with large-motor actions are a lot of fun and support your child’s sense of rhythm. Circle time can strengthen friendship among the children and also their audio skills. You can tell each week the children look forward to circle time!
