Centers are an integral part of any well-structured classroom that facilitates primary school students ages 2 through 8.
Take a look at our Grade 1 and you will see a structured yet stimulating room that the children really engage with.
Learning Centers in primary school provide students not only with the opportunity to learn through play but while doing so gain other valuable skills.
Some of the core skills learnt in Learning Center time include:
- Sorting- Classifying- Sorting- Measuring- Sharing- Cooperation among others
During center time children are able to cement concepts that are taught and as a result these skills become second nature and are applied in other areas of learning.
Learning Centers help the children and teacher in the following ways:
- Promote independence- Help students become more responsible- Allow children to learn through self-discovery- Provide teachers with time to pull children one-on-one or in small groups to target specific academic skills and better meet the needs of individuals
Some centers that we enjoy in Grade 1 are: numeracy, literacy, manipulatives, home, reading, block building, art and dramatic play.
Center time in Grade 1 allows development and learning to advance when children are challenged to achieve at a level above their current mastery and gives them the opportunity to practise newly acquired skills.
