Grade 6 further explores the Turks and Caicos Islands
During the previous few weeks the Grade 6 class has covered various topics under our new theme, ‘The Turks and Caicos’ and enjoyed a very educational field trip.
In Literacy we looked at tales from other cultures and looked at the story ‘Ali Baba And The Forty Thieves’ and ‘1001 Arabian nights’ in our literacy classes. It’s great to know about Arabic ways and culture!
Evolution and Adaptation
In Science we have learned about Evolution and Adaptation; we looked at various types of extinct creatures and endangered species. We also learned about the fabulous Mary Anning who was an amazing palaeontologist who lived in Lyme Regis.
Who was Mary Anning?
Mary Anning (21 May 1799 – 9 March 1847) was a British fossil collector, dealer, and palaeontologist who became known around the world for important finds she made in Jurassic marine fossil beds in the cliffs along the English Channel at Lyme Regis in the county of Dorset in Southwest England. Her work contributed to fundamental changes in scientific thinking about prehistoric life and the history of the Earth. Read more about this Mary Anning in BBC Primary HistoryDid you know that the Saber-Toothed Tiger was actually called the Saber-Toothed Cat?
Conch World Tour
As part of our in depth study of 'The Turks and Caicos Islands' Grade 6 enjoyed a tour of the Conch World.
Read more about Conch World.
On Friday we took a field trip to Conch World – a local conch conservation farm. We are extremely luckily to have such an educational resource so close to our school.
We learned about the way conch is bred, what it is fed and many other important facts: such as how long they live.
We also met the two oldest conchs: Jerry (who is 10 years old) and Sally (who is 12 years old).
It was great to see them come out of their shell and perform for us – we think that more people should visit and support our conch farm as it’s truly a great place and it needs our help!
