Going traditional wins at Conch Festival 2016
October is National Heritage Month at the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI). This year’s theme is “Our Culture, Our Heritage, Our Turks and Caicos.” There are many events planned throughout the islands but one of the most exciting children’s event was the third annual ISTCI Conch Festival 2016 which took place on Friday October 21.Earlier in the day, our class discussed Heritage and what is means. And the importance of preserving our culture and heritage. We also discussed the importance of the fishing, lobster and conch industries to our islands.
Each class was very excited about taking part in this event. Each class prepared a conch dish that would entered in our own conch festival. The morning was very busy.
Children washing, chopping, cutting, measuring and competing for that honour of being the ISTCI Conch Festival 2016 winner!! Which class would receive the conch trophy??The Grade 4 class was very lucky to have 2 wonderful mothers come into our class.
Mrs. Zaneta Burton and Mrs. Sophia Thomas came into school to show us and help us prepare a traditional conch salad and a tropical conch salad. Every child was involved. They each took turns cutting the vegetables and mixing. The end result was fabulous. Grade 4 traditional conch salad placed 3rd!!Congratulations to everyone! Conch Festival 2016 was a wonderful event!!
