It has certainly been a unique start of the school year as it is both the students and Mrs. Amachee’s first time beginning the school year using an online platform. This did not get in the way of the fabulous work that Grade 2 produced in the past few weeks!
The students began their Talk for Writing unit with the story, “Beegu”. They used story mapping to help understand key elements of fictional stories such as characters, settings and plot (beginning, middle and end). This was also used during the invention stage of their writing.
The children innovated parts of the story, “Beegu” by changing the main character and “hugging” the model text. They focused on structuring the story into paragraphs by referring to features of the beginning, middle and end of a story.
During the innovation week of writing, Grade 2 created their own stories about the main character ending up in a strange location.
Students also created their own aliens and spacecrafts using products found at home for STEM. They even designed what they thought Beegu’s planet looked like.
Overall, it was a terrific unit with great outcomes. Well done, Grade 2!
