We all place so much emphasis on the academic performance and attainment of our children, which is understandable, but equal importance should also be placed on their moral upbringing Through their work this week the children of Grade 3 have paid special attention to good citizen values such as sharing, peace, compassion, kindness and caring for others.
For their art project they made peace doves and wrote on each what peace meant to them. The doves now 'flutter' above the heads in the classroom to remind them to think of others.
Their big writing project this week was to discuss a superhero who brings about world peace, in class and at home, and then write a short story about it. The children discussed topics such as bullying, conflict and resolution. They were asked to write about what the hero looked like, how they made peace, the story behind the hero, what they did and who they saved. They all wrote with such enthusiasm, with titles such as 'The Peacekeeper'.
Most of the children have been in the same class group since kindergarten and have a very close bond. Whilst in Grade 3 Mrs Nesbitt has brought out the best in each child in terms of helping each other and working together, all great life skills which should never be undervalued. This team spirit and good sportsmanship was even displayed on the rugby field in the inter-school tag rugby games.
Another example this week was how the classroom transformed into the 'Mommy Spa'. Mrs Nesbitt had prepared a special moment for the children and their mums to enjoy an hour of pampering together. The children had designed a beautiful invitation and each had written their top 10 reasons why they loved their mums. The lucky mothers were treated to back and neck massages, manicures, pedicures, new hair styles and even a make over whilst enjoying coffee, pastries and soothing music. Once the children had made-over their mums they then did each other's hair.
If we show them the importance of thinking about others, as well as good spelling results, surely we cannot go wrong.
