The International School of the Turks and Caicos Islands, originally known as the International School of the West Indies (commonly called the Leeward School), was established in 1987. Its roots trace back to 1986, when it first operated out of the old Tranquillity House in Leeward, while its first building was still under construction.
The school opened with just 12 students, ranging from kindergarten to high school, taught by Monica and Harry Potts (Headmaster), Sylvie Wigglesworth, and Becky Carlson.
Doug transformed his old white van into the school's first bus, installing wooden benches for seating so Becky could shuttle the students. With the beach as their playground, shoes were optional. That Christmas, the students put on a remarkable French-language performance of Molière’s Tartuffe. Grades were combined, fostering a family-like atmosphere. By January 1987, the school moved into its new building, with students pitching in to transport books and desks. That same year, Yves Coutissant completed the school’s first landscaping, planting the now-iconic ficus trees.
After two years, the Board of Directors introduced uniforms and refocused the school to serve elementary grades only. A formal curriculum, textbooks, and additional resources were implemented. As the school expanded, a second building was added, allowing each grade its own classroom, along with a staff room and library. Each year saw the arrival of new resources and qualified teachers. A PTA was formed, and parents worked tirelessly to raise funds for additional equipment. A preschool was opened, and Ms. Barbara joined the staff.
In 1996, Mr. Ashcroft purchased Leeward Development and the school, providing a fully equipped computer lab. Further expansions brought more classrooms, a science lab, and a new staff room.
In 2016, the International School of the TCI celebrated 30 years of educating the youth of the Turks and Caicos Islands. What began as a small school in Leeward has since grown into a dynamic institution, offering education from nursery (starting at nine months old) through to Grade 9.
Over the years, the school has added a nursery program, a language curriculum, PE classes, specialist teachers, and a swimming pool. Despite its growth, what continues to make the school special are the students, teachers, and parents who contribute to its warm, close-knit community.
Recent developments include the addition of the Nursery School, a swimming pool, and the launch of the Middle School. Throughout these transformations, the school has evolved into a respected academic institution of high standards, while maintaining the nurturing and supportive environment that has always set it apart.
