How do teachers at The International School of the Turks and Caicos Islands maintain a positive learning environment whilst promoting active learning? Through using a system of rules, routines and procedures alongside a schoolwide reward system called - ClassDojo.
ClassDojo is a classroom management application to help students recognise and self-monitor their behaviour using child-friendly avatars. Students react to the distinctive “ping” which typically increases much-desired behaviour. The programme introduced by ClassDojo Mentor, Sarah Amachee, has proven effective at ISTCI over the past few years. It is extremely useful during online learning sessions as it provides features such as timers, videos encouraging growth mindset and other teacher-approved tools.
This year, our students will gain points to work towards receiving certificates - Bronze (100 points), Silver (200 points), Gold (300 points) and possibly even Platinum certificates for collecting 500 points! The points will keep accumulating throughout the 3 terms continuously. Senior Leader, Mary Jimenez, is overseeing the programme to ensure that ClassDojo is used consistently in classes from Grade 1 through to 6.
We are overjoyed to award our very first Bronze certificate to Charlie of Grade 1! He has been a model student in his class, often producing high-quality work and demonstrating excellent behaviour. Everyone at ISTCI is really proud of you, Charlie! We cannot wait to congratulate the rest of the student body as the school year continues!
