This term, Grade 2 has been learning about the beautiful by nature Turks and Caicos Islands. They have learnt about the animals of TCI by researching facts and writing informative reports. The students learnt about one animal in particular - the Potcake.
We decided to visit a place precious to TCI - the Potcake Place, a non-profit dog rescue center.
The Potcake dog is a mixed-breed dog type from the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands. Its name comes from the congealed rice and pea mixture that local residents traditionally fed stray dogs. As generations have passed, Potcakes have evolved into a breed which is extremely smart, loyal and loving.
Potcakes are rescued from around the islands of the Turks & Caicos. Litters of puppies as well as individual pups are found wandering without their littermates. They may be found by tourists while they are out exploring, or locals in their backyard or while working on construction sites.
The Grade 2 students had the opportunity to bathe puppies, name them and play with them!

They enjoyed learning about how to take care of potcakes and will use this information to write instructions using “bossy” verbs!
A special thank you to Jane and the fabulous volunteers/staff at the Potcake Place for accommodating our class and making this a memorable trip!
