Sensational Senior Kindergarten School Trip to South Pole
Our journey took us to the South Pole (Southern hemisphere), where we learned about penguin’s natural habitats.Did you know that there are 17 species of penguins? and like us they all vary in size.
We found the smallest of all the penguins (a Fairy penguin) as well as the tallest one (an Emperor penguin). We used a metre ruler to measure their heights on large sheets of paper and compare the penguins to children and objects/ furniture around the classroom.“The Fairy Penguin is taller than a paint brush but shorter than a chair”.
Looking at the globe we were able to find the Equator (half away around the earth) and South Pole, that is where the penguins are born. We also found the North Pole (above the equator) and discussed that Polar Bears live there. There are other animals that live in both the North and South Poles and we sorted the animals by where they lived. We also had a first hand experience how cold it is at Poles or high up a mountain. The children had a go at holding the huge cube of ice for a short period of time, trying to find out what’s the weather like at the Polar Regions. Discussing how we keep warm on cold (snowy/wintery) days, we found out that wearing the layers is a good way to keep in the body heat; everyone had a go at layering up in SK.
