For the past term, the Grade 4 class has been learning about the Turks & Caicos Islands. As a culminating activity to end our unit on the TCI, the Grade 4 class and their teacher, Mrs. Saunders, ventured to the 'Big South', South Caicos, for the day.
In the wee hours of the morning of Wednesday March 18th, we met at the Providenciales International Airport. One by one, we each checked in at the front desk in the regional terminal. We went through security and boarded the Inter Caribbean flights to South Caicos. As we flew across the clear blue skies and monochrome of differentiating blues of the sea, we were looking forward to the adventure that awaited us on the Big South!
We were greeted by Rev. John Malcolm and Honourable Norman Saunders, who were our personal guides for the day around South Caicos.
Our first stop was the Iris Stubbs Primary School, where we met the Grade 4 class. The students mingled and read with each other. We presented the class with a box of books, craft paper, pencils, pens and some treats for the classroom.
As a surprise, the International School’s very own, the infamous Ryan Hurdle, performed a song and descriptively read out a lovely poem.
In our class, we had learnt about the salt industry that played a vital role in the TCI. It was an amazing experience to walk the salt pond to the Boiling Hole to get a full understanding of the process of salt raking.
We heard first-hand experiences from Rev. Malcolm and Hon. Saunders about the lives of those who worked in the salt ponds.
Our next stop was a tour of the new hotel that will hopefully be opened in the summer.
After a very busy morning, we ventured to the Ocean & Beach Resort restaurant that is set on the coast of South Caicos. The view of the beautiful shades of blue ocean was breath taking. Our delicious lunch of locally caught fish was served to us by our wonderful host, Cleo Cox.
After our lunch, we went for a sightseeing ride of south. We drove along the roads to Bell Sound and then to the Sail Rock development. We stopped for a short walk to the beach.
Sadly, our day had come to an end and we headed back to the airport in South Caicos. We said our good byes to our tour guides. We boarded our plane back to Providenciales to share our adventures with our loved ones.
