Viking SatchelsThis week Grade 3's creativity hit new heights when they set out to make satchels. Continuing the theme of Vikings they looked at how the Vikings dressed and the accessories they would have used.
The Viking satchel was a large bag of cloth or textile suspended from a strap worn over the shoulder. A couple of historical manuscripts show satchels hand-made from leather with tails hanging from the bag. This has been interpreted to mean that it is made from skins. They used their bags to hold their loot, currency and other important items.
The children firstly designed their satchels and then set about choosing the fabric and fastenings. Working with intensity, alongside Mrs. Nesbitt, a mum volunteer and a helpful Grandma, the children stitched the bags together and some even used the sewing machine to make sure their seams were perfect.
