Last Wednesday morning, Ms. Charvis Ferguson, Program Manager at the Edward C. Garland Youth Centre, came into school to speak with Grades 6 to 9. The Centre is a place for children aged 10-18 to go to socialise and meet new friends, to play sports and games, to complete work, to learn new skills and activities, and most importantly to have fun.
The centre is open from 2 pm - 6 pm on weekdays and from 10 am - 6 pm on Saturdays. There are tennis, basketball and volleyball facilities, as well as a computer lab, a library, and board games and video games.
Swimming and sailing activities are due to become available in the near future. There are clubs which run from 4-5pm on weekdays, including dance, life skills, fitness, and boys’ and girls’ clubs, alongside tutoring and homework help which runs from 3:30-5pm. There is also a wide range of clubs available on Saturdays, including creating online content, cooking, DIY, jewellery with the Wellington Collection, and STEM. All clubs and activities are free of charge.
With ISTCI's Middle School recently starting new Duke of Edinburgh challenges, the Youth Centre might be a great way to start a new skill and to meet some new people. The school office has more information and sign-up sheets for those interested, or you can sign up directly at the centre.
Thank you very much to Ms. Ferguson for coming in to speak with our children, it was a very enjoyable talk that will no doubt benefit many of our students.
